Did you know that many insurances are now covering doulas and that even if you are on the fence about having a doula at your birth or in your postpartum transition you can still use your benefit for virtual birth and postpartum consultations?
As valuable as it is to have in person doula support, there are some people who aren't sure if that's right for them. I am here to share that you can still benefit from this, well... benefit, utilizing your coverage for birth and postpartum prep and consultations.
Doulas have a unique ability to provide broad and personalized birth info to the people we care for. I am proud to say that I have supported over 50 families through birth and postpartum and have 9 + years of experience in birth, with the majority of them being in a hospital setting. This speaks to the broad knowledge base that I come from--I have supported high risk, unmedicated, highly medicated, vaginal,
caesarean, in hospital, and out of hospital births. I also have a broad view of how care is given from one provider and birth setting to another (specific to our area in Long Beach, South Bay, and North OC). This experience has deeply enriched the way that I help families prepare for the mystery of their birth and postpartum journey in really practical ways. This goes way beyond the info given at a hospital birth class.
Here are some ways I love to support people in this preparation through virtual and/or in person consultations:
Clarify/create birth preferences- I can help you work out your birth preferences for your specific situation, help prepare you for how to navigate the unexpected, and learn how to advocate in a hospital setting (no matter what type of birth you are hoping for)
Process fears and anxieties- I can help you process fears and anxieties connected to childbirth & postpartum and provide tools to help navigate the unknowns of birth to build confidence and trust.
Childbirth prep- I will help you prepare for labor through teaching on stages of labor, when to head to your birth location, how to manage labor at home, & coping strategies including breathing, positions, and partner support.
Partner prep- I will teach your partner many tools to support you through labor and postpartum
Postpartum planning- I will sit down with you and your partner and/or support people to create a plan on how to support the postpartum transition and feeding journey
Breastfeeding 101- I will teach you the basics of getting a good latch, mother led and baby led breastfeeding, how to support your milk supply, as well as how to deal with common struggles
Hospital birth 101- I will answer all your questions about the mystery of giving birth in a hospital for the first time: what you should know, how to prepare for advocacy and ownership of your birth
These doula visits are covered for Kaiser, Cal Optima, and Optum members and are also available for anyone who would like to chat and pay out of pocket. If you would like to find out more, please fill out my contact form and specify that you would like more info on birth and or postpartum consultations.
